Shit ! It's November ?!

COLOR Magazine is having another one of their killer party's this coming Tuesday in Vancouver .  Go !

     www.colormagazine.ca

and here's something else I just discovered :
Slide Slam SF :  www.fotovision.org

What : FREE monthly event providing aspiring and professional photographers the chance to present their work .

When : Every third Thursday of the month from 7 - 9 PM .

Where : 291 Gallery , 291 Geary Street , SF

McSweeney's is bringing a new newspaper / magazine / book ish publication to the streets this December . Be on the lookout eh !

the photographic stylings of Tierney Gearon :  I chose to post these ultra-cool double exposure-y images instead of her photos of naked children and little boys pissing in front of the camera just cause , ummmmm ... well , ya know , yeahhhh ........

been working on my photo retouching skills quite a bit these days . I thought I'd post a couple
"before & after's" and see if anybody has any feedback .... I seem to be doing this kind of stuff everyday so I'm getting the hang of it , just need to work on making the photos look less "Photoshop-y" .

recent reads :

I don't know how but these two songs were stuck in
my head the entire week ....like,seriously !

Dylan's Dad

I was pleasantly awakened by a call from an old friend from high school yesterday morning . He and his friends are in the middle of an ambitious road down to San Diego and Las Vegas and are were in need of a place to crash ... Anyhow , in all the years that we've known each other , Dylan had never told me his Dad is a senior photographer for Reuters Canada .This was very interesting news ...

Today while reading Robert Hirsch's Exploring Color Photography , I came across a photo by William Lesch of Tuscon , AZ . The discovery of this guy's photography has been the highlight of my week , so far ...

"With a large-format camera mounted on a tripod , an initial daylight exposure was made on daylight film , the shutter was closed , and the camera and film left in position until after dark. Then the shutter was opened and another series of exposures, using a small, battery-powered light with colored gels, was made on the same piece of film."

Where the Richard things are

I awkwardly scanned a few pages from one of my favorite coffee table books : Looker by Richard Kern  . A great book , definitely something to ask your girlfriend for for Christmas ... Be sure to check out his documentary TV series, Shot By Kern .

California color guru - Richard Misrach

The Richard Avedon exhibition at SFMOMA is going to be coming to an end in just over a month ( November 29th ) , so I recommend putting it on that "to do" list . Just a heads up , this exhibition is a few bucks extra and the museum is closed on Wednesdays .

canadian vacation

That's right ! I'm taking a break from the hustling and bustling and hanging out in Vancouver this week , enjoying crisp, clean air and delicious snacks . ( I'd been seriously craving a Tim Horton's / Sushi Station combo for the last five months )

The Niece !

many thanks to my ol' pal Ephraim in Tokyo for referring me to the work of Josef Hoflehner , an Austrian photographer who takes killer plane-landing pictures...

you can't spell Cooley without Cool...

I don't tweet...

...but if I did , I'd probably be saying something about how my most recent favorite photographer is Matt Gunther from NYC . I had a hell of a time finding steal-able images of his so you gotta check out his site , its amazing :

Another big-time inspiration over the last couple years is Dutch photographer Isabella Rozendaal : Her On Loving Animals photos are hilarious ...

About two weeks ago I had to do a three photo series for a class based on the word "fear". Everybody seemed to like these but I thought they were cheesy as hell  (I guess they weren't the ones out in the middle of the night pretending to be homeless and angry).

and then what do you know? I see an actual dead guy just a couple days later...Yikes !

I have an event to go to on Tuesday and ran out of cards. I hope I don't get laughed at too hard...

and on an unrelated note, I thought I'd post this old video I made a couple years ago while living in Japan. Most people seem to get a kick out of it ...

all the girls ....

Happy Sunday afternoon ! Last night was another fine evening at the Red Devil Lounge for the Audiodub / Lou Dog Trio show . The opening band, Search Party (from Portland) was awesome too and the singer had one of those Geddy Lee / Claudio Sanchez style voices which are always interesting . I only got slightly hammered this time ...

was very stoked to see the new Communication Arts Photography Annual hitting the stores last week ! I didn't have any problem dropping the $24.00 as there is not one picture in it that isn't amazing . I highly recommend purchasing this , or spending at least an hour browsing through it at Borders ....

and yeah , here's a few other things I've been reading lately ...

This guy's got some great stuff (that is , if you're into stuff that is great) .
Jason Nocito :     jasonnocito.com

I'm by no means a fan of Mary Kate Olson , but this one's been on my desktop for the last couple weeks ...

Dan Winters will be giving a presentation next Wednesday at the Academy of Art here in San Francisco. You should go !

This guy Chase Jarvis is pretty on-point and seems to really like the word "epic" :

Found these browsing the ol' Facebook . I wish I were one of the guys in this first picture right now .

Rad ! These two had been on my computer forever, and while I can't remember the photographers , the bottom one was from an issue of Mass Appeal Magazine about a year ago .

Art school student self-portraits : always good for a chuckle ...

summarizing summer

Well folks , that's a wrap... summer's over ! Here in San Francisco however, the locals speak of the "Indian Summer", when the temperatures are warm and the surf is good .This is supposed to be starting soon , so I'm excited . Today's post is about something I love just as much as a hot summer's day: retro 70's photos . While back in Vancouver a couple months ago , I spent an entire day digging through my parent's ancient photo albums from long before I was born. (understandably, the same era when they owned sailboats and spent days reclining poolside) Anyway, I picked out a few of my favorites and into the scanner they went ...

...checked out the opening of the Neighborhood SF show at 111 Minna Gallery last night. Lots of fun, lots of amazing art, lots of mingling :

August 31, 2009

Oh hi ! I almost had to cancel today's post due to finger soreness from so much clapping at yesterday's Giants game. Bad joke, bad joke... Hope everyone had a great weekend !

Cut a gram off it ...

POS Crew and Co. were in town last week, adding to the steady flow of couch surfers who've crashed in my living room over the summer.T'was a week of parties, events, shenanigans, zaniness, and class-clownism...

This poor girl was passed out so bad even rubbing a puppy in her face couldn't wake her up...

August 19, 2009

This past weekend I gave a 9.82 out of 10 on the mellowness scale. Ate some great food , drank a keg at the beach and caught up with some friends visiting from Vancouver . Also, did an old fashioned "WATPORT" (walk around taking pictures of random things)..... hadn't done one of those in a very very long time :

For those of you from the Bay Area who haven't heard of Audiodub , what the hell ? These guys just put out their second studio album "Daytime TV", and have been getting played on local radio stations all along the West Coast. For all of you whom I invite to the shows yet never come , you need to cut that out ...like seriously ! Audiodub also doubles as a Sublime tribute band and their show will be the highlight of your week , I swear . I'm not just saying this because my long-lost cousin Jordan plays bass in the band and I get free beer..... anyway , here are some photos from the recent album release party at The Red Devil Lounge .

August 10, 2009

I spent the last two days working with a group of people from places like Georgia,Florida, and Louisiana. As a Canadian who has never travelled to these places,I was fascinated by their gnarly southern accents, and never-ending references to the movie Forrest Gump. I think they were equally shocked and even disappointed with how little I used "Eh" and "Aboot". Anyway, today I'm making my debut in the blogging world. With my website up now I thought I could use this to post miscellaneous photos by me,you,he,she,they,him,her......and anything else cool that comes along. Have a great day , y'all !
